An electric powered automatic gate is built from numerous components supplied by many different companies both within the UK and abroad. To clarify and identify the many thousands of potential parts every systems description is classified in to the following main headings:
- Ground and building works
- Physical element (gates, support post & furniture)
- Operators & Motors
- Controllers & Control panels
- Command Controls
- Safety Devices & Alike
- Miscellaneous equipment
- Communications & Surveillance
- Associated items (lighting, letterbox etc.)
Since 2000 all gate systems have been legally identified as in-situ machines and as such are governed by the Machinery Directive. This directive incorporates many British & European Standards that all need to be adhered too, when designing, installing, maintaining and repairing any gate installation.
There are legal responsibilities for both domestic and commercial installation owners as well as manufacturers (who commission the original installation) and service providers of it. Therefore it is strongly recommended that only qualified engineers with adequate experience are used on any work required. Consequentially, the Supply Only of any part other than a consumable item should be restricted to approved persons only.
Consumable items are the everyday components used by occupants and include remote controls, cards, keys, tokens etc.
